Board Member Bios


KATHY BARBA received her B.A. in Vocal Performance from CSU, Fresno and subsequently moved to the Bay area where she frequently performed with the West Bay Opera, Berkeley Opera and San Rafael Opera companies.  Her roles included Queen of the Night from The Magic Flute and Adina in The Elixir of Love.  Ms. Barba is a past award winner of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and has performed solo recitals as well as concerts with various groups in the Fresno area, including the Fresno Community Concert Band adnd Fresno Choral Artists   In 2007, she appeared as soprano soloist with the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra in Anton Bruckner's Te Deum.  She teaches voice privately and has been a vocal instructor at Fresno City College since 2001.  She currently serves as President of the Sierra Chamber Opera Board of Directors and is a member of NATS, National Association of Teachers of Singing.

EDWIN FERRALL was born in Los Angeles, served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55 and graduated from U.S.C. in 1957.  He married Sara Freese in 1957 and they now have four children and eight grandchildren.  Over the years, Ed's vocation has been selling various kinds of insurance but his avocation has been the study of Gilbert and Sullivan.  At age seven, he saw a movie version of The Mikado and was instantly hooked!  He was a founding member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in Los Angeles and has contributed several articles on G & S plot flaws to the G & S Journal.  He also collects old operetta recordings and G & S memorabilia.  In addition, Ed enjoys traveling, having gone to London six times, as well as to Paris and Prague.  Ed has worked extensively on our IMPRESARIO campaign and is valued as a wonderful and energetic addition to our team.

SUSAN SPENCE LIBERTY-WARWICK was a long-time employee at Fresno City College, first as an instructor/coordinator of Tutorial Resources and then as an administrator. She retired in 1999 as the Director of the fine and performing arts, honors, and developmental education programs. She went back to work from 2002 until 2004 as the interim dean of instruction for the Humanities Division. Since her second retirement, she has been learning to play the piano and serving on local and regional boards connected with her church and other faith-based communities and with the arts community in Fresno. She served as President of the Sierra Chamber Opera Board of Directors from 2005-2009 and currently serves as its Vice-President.

CARL NUSS was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but has lived most of his life here in Fresno.  He graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of music and received his teaching credential from Fresno State College. Although he has performed as a singer, including four years with the Sierra Chamber Opera, and a pianist, his focus the past several years has been in the classroom. He is presently a sixth grade teacher at Birney Elementary School in the Fresno Unified School District. He is the proud father of a daughter, Sarah, who is studying to become a doctor. Carl has been on the board of the Sierra Chamber Opera for the past seven years.

CAROL BLORE REA is one of the co-founders of Sierra Chamber Opera and since its inception,  she has served as president or vice president.  She heads the TESCO endowment committee and, under her leadership, the Board of Directors has developed and grown.  In 1989 she initiated the annual production of the educational booklet which goes to every student and teacher in our annual audience of 58,000-60,000.  Carol has a bachelor's degree in piano and is an expert pianist and accompanist.  She also has a master's degree in vocal performance and has been heard countless times as oratorio singer, recitalist and stage performer, playing lead roles in numerous opera and musical theater productions.  Carol has been a private voice teacher in Fresno since 1974 and is a member of NATS, National Association of Teachers of Singing.  She is currently serving on the SCO Board of Directors as Treasurer.

REBECCA SARKISIAN, a soprano, received her MM in Vocal Performance at San Francisco State University after earning her BA degree in Vocal Performance from CSU, Fresno.  Ms. Sarkisian has performed in a variety of genres including opera, operetta, oratorio, musical theater and recital, both locally and throughout the state.  Working with such organizations as the Music From Bear Valley Festival, Opera Fresno, Center Stage Productions, Good Company Players and The Sierra Chamber Opera, she has performed a number of roles including Despina in "Cosi fan tutte," Lily in "Kiss Me Kate," Frasquita in "Carmen," and Lady Thiang in "The King and I."  Rebecca serves as vocal coach for a number of local theater companies, including Good Company Players, Center Stage Productions, and Children’s Musical Theaterworks.  She has been associated with the Fresno City College Music Faculty since 1986, teaching voice and serving as Director of the Opera/Musical Theatre Workshop.  She currently teaches the Intermediate/Advanced Voice Students.  She is a member of California Music Educators Association and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.  Ms. Sarkisian also maintains a private voice studio, instructing students of all ages in the art of singing.
